Brazil's CSN may idle blast furnace No. 2 at Presidente Vargas plant

Affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, steel demand has weakened, and many of Brazil’s steel mills have ceased production of their blast furnaces.

It was reported that Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN), the largest fully integrated steel producer in Brazil and Latin America, was also considering discontinuing production of its blast furnace No. 2 at its Presidente Vargas plant in Volta Redonda, State of Rio de Janeiro.

The schedule of discontinuing production has not been determined. In addition, it was understood that CSN might also lay off 1,000-2,000 employees.

CSN's annual production capacity of crude steel and rolled products was 5.6 million tons and 5.1 million tons respectively. Its steel products include slabs, hot and cold-rolled, galvanized and tin rolling products, which are widely used in distribution, packaging, automotive, household appliances and construction industries.
