Crude Steel Output by CIS Region Witnessed Substantial Decline

The monthly production data published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) suggests notable decline in crude steel output by the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region in July this year. The regional output reported decline of 5.8% when matched with the previous year. The output totalled 8.091 million tonnes (Mt), compared with 8.588 Mt during the same month a year before.

The leading steel producer in the region was Russia. The Russian output totalled 5.800 Mt, down by 5.0% from 6.106 Mt in July last year. Meantime, the output by Ukraine too recorded marginal decline by 1.9% over the year from 1.784 Mt to 1.751 Mt. Kazakhstan, the third largest regional steel producer, saw its output nosedive by almost 40% year-on-year. The monthly crude steel output by other countries in the region is as follows: Byelorussia (210,000 tonnes), Uzbekistan (70,000 tonnes) and Moldova (20,000 tonnes).

The cumulative crude steel output during the initial seven-month period of the current year totalled 57.010 Mt, which is marginally lower by 4.3% over the previous year. The crude steel production by the region had totalled 59.584 Mt from January to July in 2019. All the countries except Uzbekistan reported slump in production year-on-year.

The top steel producers in the C.I.S region in Jan-July ‘20 were Russia (41.054 Mt), Ukraine (11.855 Mt) and Kazakhstan (1.900 Mt).
