Leading domestic steel industry associations and the labour union representing steelworkers in the U.S. have urged the President-elect Joe Biden to preserve the steel tariffs introduced in 2018, in order to ensure protection of national security.

In a letter addressed to Biden, trade bodies- American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA), The Committee on Pipe and Tube Imports (CPTI) and American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and the labour organization- the United Steelworkers union (USW) noted that continuation of steel tariffs and quota system is vital to ensure the viability of domestic steel industry, especially on the back of rising excess global steel overcapacity. The abolition or weakening of them will only result in new surge in imports, which could severely damage domestic steel producers and their workers, the letter said.
