Tata Steel Netherlands, in partnership with supply chain firm ECOLOG and other stakeholders, is studying the import of liquid hydrogen from Norway to Amsterdam for use in its steel plants.

Agreements with Gen2 Energy and the Port of Amsterdam outline plans for transporting liquid hydrogen via ECOLOG's specialized vessels, converting it back into a gaseous state at ECOLOG's Amsterdam terminals, and distributing it through a planned pipeline network.

To further its sustainability goals, Tata aims to capture residual CO2 emissions from its green steel operations and export them to Norway’s offshore storage facilities.

Collaborating with Horisont Energi, OCAP, the Port of Amsterdam, and some financial institutions, Tata Steel and ECOLOG are exploring a CO2 shipping corridor. The cold energy from the conversion of liquid hydrogen to gas will be repurposed to liquefy CO2.

Tata Steel plans to cut CO2 emissions by 40% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2045.
