It was reported that the workers of Tata Steel Netherlands (TSN)’s steel plant in Ijmuiden resigned on Monday (May 18th) in order to support their chairman, Theo Henrar.

Theo Henrar has been the chairman of the board of TSN since 2008 and has received strong support from the staff. However, because he advocated the retention of the Dutch steel mill business and refused to lay off staff, so he was removed from the position of director. The local trade union also participated in the protest and called for organizing a strike to express their anger.

In November of last year, TSN' parent company Tata Steel Europe announced that the Ijmuiden plant would lay off 1,600 people. However, this decision was withdrawn in a few days.

However, due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus epidemic, the concerns of mass layoffs due to the pessimistic outlook of the economy were again aroused.
