The result of the US presidential election will influence the direction of the aluminum premium in the American Midwest, but the impact may not be so fast.

Most people agreed that the results of the election will also affect the Section 232 tariffs, but both the buyer and the seller were worried about the uncertainty of the future.

If Trump wins the election, market participants expected that the current trend of aluminum premiums will not change substantially. However, if Biden is elected president, most market participants predicted that Section 232 tariffs will be canceled, which may reduce the Midwest aluminum premium to the May level, when the premium was less than 10 cents per pound.
