Alcoa Corp., the largest aluminum producer in the U.S., reported that tariffs on Canadian imports cost the company US$115 million in the second quarter, highlighting the impact of President Donald Trump’s trade measures. To lessen the burden, Alcoa redirected Canadian-produced aluminum to markets outside the US.

The tariff cost in the second quarter was nearly six times higher than the US$20 million reported in the first quarter, when tariffs were at 25%. The rate increased to 50% in June as part of efforts to boost domestic production.

CEO William Oplinger said Alcoa has held talks with both US and Canadian officials, including Trump, and warned that American customers are paying significantly more for aluminum due to the tariffs.
