LanzaTech Global, Inc., a leader in carbon recycling, and ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest integrated steel and mining company, announced a significant production milestone at ArcelorMittal’s Steelanol facility in Ghent. The facility has produced enough ethanol to support shipment by barge, marking a major step in their joint mission to create a European supply chain for sustainable ethanol.

The Steelanol plant, which began production in 2023, converts carbon-rich industrial emissions from ArcelorMittal’s blast furnace into fuel-grade ethanol using LanzaTech’s innovative recycling technology. The ethanol can be used in fuel markets or further processed for consumer products such as fragrances and packaging.

With an annual capacity of 80 million liters, the facility is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 125,000 tons, supporting the EU’s goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030. This milestone highlights the partners’ commitment to advancing a circular economy and achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
