ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada announced Wednesday (June 11) the permanent closure of its wire drawing mill in Hamilton, Ontario, in the coming weeks, resulting in 153 layoffs. The company's wire drawing activities, serving telecommunications, construction, and automotive sectors, will be fully transferred to its Montreal facility.

Mike Hnatjuk, president of United Steelworkers Local 5328, said challenges included steel dumping from China and recent US tariffs, though the company stated the shutdown might have occurred regardless.

Stéphane Brochu, CEO of ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada, said the decision was necessary for the long-term sustainability of their wire drawing business.
