The Bolivian government sped up the construction of the Mutún steel complex, in order to produce high-quality steel to replace 50% of national steel imports and generate US$75 million a year in its first stage.

Mutún, located in the Santa Cruz department of Bolivia, has the largest iron reserve in the world. Empresa Siderúrgica del Mutún (ESM), created in December 2005, is the company in charge of this national project. Its president, Jorge Alvarado, informed that the construction of the first stage of the complex reports a progress of about 60% and was expected to be completed by the end of 2023 and start operations in 2024.

In the first stage, the steel complex will produce at least 200,000 tons per year of long steel products such as both corrugated and smooth construction bars.
