Brazil's Vale announced that it had set up Agera, a company created to develop and expand its sustainable sand business. Agera is based in the state of Minas Gerais and will receive the sand produced from the treatment of tailings generated by Vale's iron ore operations in the state and promote its commercialization and distribution.

In 2021, Vale started to produce sustainable sand after researching for seven years. Sustainable sand can substitute sand extracted from the environment. The company expects that the sales will reach 1 million tons this year and 2.1 million in 2024.
