British Steel has received the green light to construct an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) at its Scunthorpe headquarters, with approval granted by the North Lincolnshire Council after thorough consultations. A similar application for an EAF at its Teesside site was recently approved by the Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council. The proposed £1.25-billion overhaul marks British Steel's largest transformation in over a century, contingent upon support from the UK Government.

CEO Xijun Cao highlighted the pivotal role EAFs play in reducing CO2 emissions by over 75%. The company is engaged in preparatory works while in discussions with the government to ensure a smooth transition to electric arc steelmaking, aiming for a sustainable future.
