Canada’s Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said on Monday that Quebec's aluminum industry is expected to receive "hundreds of millions of dollars" from a new $5 billion federal fund, which is designed to support Canadian sectors affected by US tariffs.

Nearly 90% of Canada's aluminum is produced in Quebec, and Joly stated the government is still finalizing how the fund will be distributed. Jean Simard, President and CEO of the Aluminium Association of Canada, joined the minister, noting that tariff relief is crucial for maintaining the industry's global competitiveness.

Simard reported that of the 3.3 million tons of aluminum produced in 2024, 90% was exported, with 90% of those exports going to the US. Despite growing markets in Europe and Asia, he said the US remains important for the Canadian aluminum industry.
