Last week, Guinea’s new government asked the local bauxite miners to submit their plan for refining alumina within its borders by May, including their proposals and precise timetables. Those companies who failed to do it will be subject to penalties.

The interim government that came to power through a coup last September has taken a harder attitude on overseas miners in Guinea, different from the previous government’s friendly attitude.

Mamady Doumbouya, the interim president of Guinea, has ordered to stop iron ore mining since coming to power to clarify Guinea’s rights. He said that Société Minière de Boké (SMB) and Compagnie des bauxites de Guinée (CBG) have already been recorded as supporting domestic aluminum refineries for bauxite ore.
