India sets up committee to curb aluminum imports from China

It was reported that the Indian Ministry of Mines has set up an Interministerial Committee to curb the imports of aluminum from China, as well as to support the domestic aluminum smelters to replace their supply from other countries.
There were more than 60% of aluminum demand in India was supplied by imports, of which China accounted for 16% of the total.

According to statistics, India’s aluminum imports from China were up by 58% year on year in the fiscal year 2019. Moreover, China’s secondary aluminum accounted for an 80% share in India.

The Aluminium Association of India suggested the government impose a 12.5% import duty on secondary aluminum products. Besides, the industry also suggested an increase in the basic import tariffs for primary aluminum from 7.5% to 10% and a hike to 10% from 2.5% for aluminum scraps.
