Jindal Stainless, a leading stainless steel mill in India, planned to construct a green hydrogen plant in Haryana state with Hygenco India, a renewables developer.

According to Jindal Stainless, the solar-powered plant will contain an alkaline electrolyser, which has an annual potential production capacity of up to 250 tons. However, in the early stage, Jindal Stainless is aiming to have 75 tons for annual capacity.

Based on Jindal Stainless’ plan, the hydrogen plant was expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 2,700 tons annually. In the meantime, the hydrogen produced will be applied to replace ammonia in Jindal’s annealing of stainless steel, part of the heat treatment process.

According to the managing director of Jindal Stainless Abhyuday Jindal, the green hydrogen plant will catalyze their transition from thermal to clean energy in the Indian manufacturing space.

Now Jindal is targeting to hike stainless steel melting capacity to 2.1 million tons per year from the current 1.1 million tons per year; meanwhile, Jindal will also increase its ferrochrome capacity to 350,000 tons per year from the current 250,000 tons per year. Both projects were expected to complete by the end of March 2023.
