India’s stainless steel industry is operating at only 60% of its 7.5 million ton capacity, prompting domestic producers to call for stronger government support to curb imports and improve utilization.

Current measures, including Quality Control Orders (QCOs) and temporary safeguard duties, are seen as insufficient. Industry leaders have requested special import investigations and stricter import regulations to protect domestic market share.

Aligned with the government’s “self-reliance” initiative, Indian stainless steel companies plan significant capacity expansion. With domestic steel prices dropping, the industry is seeking effective policy support to boost utilization and growth.
