The commercial operation of the joint-venture alumina smelter between PT Aneka Tambang (Antam) and PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum) will be delayed until at least July 2024, said Dante Sinaga, president director of the joint venture.

The delay was due to a dispute between contractors for the construction of the smelter, PT Pembangunan Perumahan (PTPP), and China Aluminum International Engineering (CHALIECO) over the projects and contract value.

Another reason for the postponed construction period was that contractors had to purchase land after relocating the red mud dam used to store industrial waste from the smelter.

This project was originally aimed to be completed by 2022.
