A conflict occurred on January 14 at the Gunbuster Nickel Industry (GNI) nickel smelter, under China's Jiangsu Delong Nickel Industry located in North Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. The conflict resulted in the death of two employees and the burning of vehicles and dormitories.

It was understood that the cause of the conflict was that the company's security guards blocked the employees who wanted to enter the smelter for strike action because seven of the eight demands made by the employees had not yet been approved by the company's management.

The smelter suspended operations immediately after the conflict broke out, but resumed operations on the 17th.
