In a letter written by the Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA), the body representing domestic stainless steel producers asked the steel ministry to impose a protective surtax on imports of stainless steel products from China, to secure a level playing field for the domestic manufacturers while facing rising imports.

Rajamani Krishnamurti, the president of ISSDA, said in the letter that Chinese producers benefit from massive, WTO-incompatible government subsidies and engage in behavior that distorts market conditions.

The association sought trade barriers like the surtax recently introduced by the Canadian government as it believed that similar trade remedy measures would be very beneficial to the Indian stainless steel industry and ensure the sustainability of the Indian domestic industry.
