Japan's steel consumption drops in May

According to data released by the Japan Iron and Steel Association (JISF), in May, Japan's domestic steel consumption was about 3.76 million tons, down by 7.3% from April and dropping by 11.3% year on year.

In the first five months of this year, Japan's domestic steel consumption was 20.03 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 5.8%.

During the period, steel consumption in Japan's construction industry was 4.25 million tons, sliding by 0.3% year on year. Auto industry steel consumption was 4.45 million tons, down by 15.8% compared to the same period of last year. The shipbuilding industry consumed 1.18 million tons of steel, a year-on-year increase of 13.1%.
