According to the Aluminum Association, aluminum demand (shipments by domestic producers and imports) in North America, including the US and Canada, totaled an estimated 14,056 million pounds through the first half of 2024, up by 5.2% compared to the same period a year ago. The growth followed lower demand in 2023, 13,365 million pounds, mainly due to industry destocking and a drop of 25% in imports.

Charles Johnson, President and CEO of the Aluminum Association, said that 2024 remains a strong year for aluminum demand. Customers and end consumers have a demand for sustainable, recyclable materials like aluminum. The association members are making investments in production and jobs in the US to help meet this need now and into the future.

In the reporting period, North American aluminum exports, excluding scrap, had a growth of 25.6%, and aluminum imports declined by 14% year to date.
