Rio Tinto completes acquisition of SCC’s 20.64% interest in New Zealand Aluminium Smelters

On November 1, Rio Tinto completed an acquisition of Sumitomo Chemical Company’s (SCC) 20.64% interest in New Zealand Aluminium Smelters (NZAS).

NZAS owns and operates the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter in New Zealand. Upon the completion of the transaction, Rio Tinto now fully owns NZAS.

Besides, Rio Tinto has also completed the previously announced acquisition of SCC's 2.46% interest in Boyne Smelters Limited (BSL). Together with the recently completed acquisition of 11.65% of BSL shares owned by Mitsubishi, Rio Tinto's total interest in BSL reaches 73.5%.

The price for Rio Tinto’s acquisition of SCC’s NZAS and BSL shares was undisclosed.
