According to the report, due to the long-lasting outbreak of coronavirus, Rio Tinto decided to close a total of 100 prebake cells at its Jonquiere aluminum smelter, involving the production of about 8,000 tons, which accounted for about 5% of Arvida's production. The closed electrolysis cells will not be reopened soon.

Furthermore, Rio Tinto will reduce its total output gradually this year.

The Arvida smelter was located in Saguenay, Quebec, Canada, began operations in 1954.
