Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission has approved Walsin Lihwa’s acquisition of Mannesmann Stainless Tubes GmbH (MST) for more than one third of the stake through its Italian subsidiary Cogne Acciai Speciali S.p.A. (CAS).

The Fair Trade Commission said that both Walsin Lihwa and MST produce and sell stainless steel seamless steel pipes and nickel-based alloy pipes, and have horizontal competition in the market. CAS’s stainless steel billet and nickel alloy billets are the raw materials for MST to produce stainless steel seamless steel pipes and nickel-based alloy pipes, which is a vertical integration relationship.

Besides, MST mainly operates in the European market, so this combination will not change Taiwan’s market structure and will not lead to restrictive competition. The combination of the above-mentioned enterprises still faces competition pressure from domestic and foreign industries. Therefore, the combination is not prohibited.
