According to the US Geological Survey, the United States’ aluminium crude metal and alloy imports in August 2024 experienced a decline for the second consecutive month, following an increase last seen in June. As per the data revealed, the import volume in August plunged by 25,000 tonnes or 8.5 per cent month-on-month to 268,000 tonnes.

In the previous month (July), the United States aluminium crude metal and alloy imports were 293,000 tonnes, down by 13.82 per cent from 340,000 tonnes in June.

In the first eight months, the United States’ cumulative imports were 2.41 million tonnes, down by 7.69 per cent from 2.6 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the previous year.

From Canada, the top exporter of aluminium crude metal and alloys to the United States, the US imported 203,000 tonnes of metal versus 235,000 tonnes secured in July 2024. That reflected a sharp month-on-month fall of 13.62 per cent, following an increase of 1.29 per cent in July from 232,000 tonnes in June.

However, despite the plunge in August, the United States imports from Canada during the first eight months of 2024 edged an increase of 5.14 per cent from 1.75 million tonnes to 1.84 million tonnes.

Imports from the United Arab Emirates also fell M-o-M in August by 8.3 per cent from 28,900 tonnes to 26,500 tonnes. The decline in monthly imports has been continuing since May, reflecting a fall of 38.52 per cent over four months.

In eight months, the United States imported 236,000 tonnes of aluminium crude metal and alloys from the UAE, compared to 357,000 tonnes during the same period of the last year.
