Rio Tinto chief executive Jakob Stausholm said that the unrestricted flow of Russian aluminum into the US is weakening the competitiveness of North American producers as imports from Russia’s still exempt from US sanctions.

In spite of global buyers’ refusal to purchase Russian metals due to the invasion of Ukraine, Russia’s imports increased by nearly 60% in August compared to April.

RUSAL, a leading aluminum supplier in Russia, was hit by big consumers’ decision not to keep buying its metal; however, it didn't stop some North American buyers from continuing to import from the company.
