Canada's steelmaker Algoma Steel recently tapped its first steel from its next-generation electric arc furnace (EAF) facility in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, marking a significant milestone in its green transformation plan. This is the first time in the world that Algoma Steel has fully transitioned from a traditional blast furnace (BF) converter steelmaking process to a mini-process EAF steelmaking process and has commenced operations, ushering in a new era for the steel industry.

The new facility is equipped with two Danieli Digimelter 250-ton digital EAFs, with a designed annual production capacity of 3.7 million tons of liquid steel. Supporting facilities include two ladle furnaces and a new twin-tank vacuum degassing unit.

The facility also incorporates an automated scrapyard, cranes, and sorting and charging systems to enhance efficiency and safety. This technology not only enables the production of high-quality steel from recycled scrap but also offers the flexibility to process a wide range of raw materials.

Algoma Steel expects to reduce its carbon emissions by approximately 70% through the Danieli Q-One digital power supply system and become a leading green steel producer in North America with Ontario's clean electrical grid.
