Salzgitter’s subsidiary to build new large-scale shredder plant

DEUMU Deutsche Erz- und Metall-Union GmbH, a subsidiary of the Salzgitter Group, has begun construction on a new large-scale steel shredder plant in Salzgitter, a project costing approximately EUR 30 million. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 1, 2025.

The facility will process steel scrap into high-quality scrap grades, an important step for the Salzgitter Group's transition to low-carbon steel production under its SALCOS®-Salzgitter AG Low CO2 Steelmaking program. Both the new shredder and the first phase of the SALCOS® program are set to begin production in the first half of 2027.

The plant will produce a new "4 SALCOS®" scrap grade, specifically developed for the new production process. This investment represents a significant contribution to the circular economy and the creation of green steel.
