On May 4, 2023, the European Commission unconditionally approved Norsk Hydro’s proposed acquisition of the Polish recycler Alumetal S.A., saying that the merger would not raise competition concerns in the European Economic Area (EEA).

The European Commission made this decision after an in-depth investigation of the proposed acquisition. Both Norsk Hydro and Alumetal are major producers of aluminum foundry alloys in Europe.

Norsk Hydro first announced its acquisition proposal of Alumetal in April last year.

Alumetal, the second-largest producer of casting aluminum alloys in Europe, has an annual production capacity of 275,000 tons at its three plants in Poland and one in Hungary.
