Metlen Energy & Metals, a Greek energy and metals giant, recently announced a new expansion plan aimed at further extracting the key mineral gallium from its existing bauxite processing business.

The group has achieved a complete processing chain from bauxite to alumina and then to aluminum in its own mines in Greece and has decided to invest EUR 295.5 million in an expansion project to increase alumina production capacity to 1.27 million tons per year and add a gallium production line.

Gallium plays a key role in semiconductor manufacturing, and with the rapid development of high-tech fields such as smartphones, 5G communications, and renewable energy, the demand for gallium continues to grow.

Metlen plans to start gallium production in 2027, with an expected annual production capacity of 50 tons. In addition, the group will continue to focus on the dynamics of the global semiconductor market, actively adjust its product structure, strengthen technology research and development and innovation, and strengthen cooperation with domestic and foreign partners to jointly promote the sustained and healthy development of the semiconductor industry.
