South Korea’s automotive giant Hyundai planned to invest more than US$6 billion to establish a steel mill near Donaldsonville, Louisiana, to supply its US Hyundai and Kia vehicle assembly plants.

The project, expected to create around 1,300 full-time jobs, will occupy re-zoned sugar cane fields in Ascension Parish.

Following a December agreement on tax and other incentives with state officials, construction could start in 2026, awaiting related regulatory approvals, with operations beginning by 2029.
