Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs, explained recently that to increase downstream value was the main reason that the government stopped nickel exports.

"The government has a vision for the nickel industry, which means nickel must be made into value-added products before export," said Luhut. "Indonesia will have more job opportunities, and taxes will also increase with the processing of nickel commodities into batteries or stainless steel."

Luhut also said that Indonesia must enter the global supply chain, instead of just becoming a country of foreign product market.
