Indonesia seeks India's partnership to reduce stainless steel reliance on China

The Indonesian Nickel Miners Association (APNI) intends to partner with India to diversify its stainless steel export destinations. Currently, China receives 90% of Indonesia's output, but APNI seeks to redirect about 30-40% of these volumes toward India’s rapidly expanding market. This move aims to mitigate risks associated with over-dependence on a single buyer.
APNI also raised concerns regarding current mineral valuation, saying that buyers often ignore the value of iron, chromium, and cobalt within nickel ore. This discrepancy leads to revenue losses and creates uneven global pricing.
By seeking broader mineral valuation policies and new trade partnerships, APNI plans to strengthen domestic downstreaming and secure more balanced international trade relations.
