The Washington state Senate is evaluating Governor Inslee's request for funding to help restart the Intalco aluminum smelter in Cherry Point. The supplemental budget proposal involved US$10 million, which will be used to pay for the upgrade of this idled plant.

Don Goldberg, the Director of Economic Development for the Port of Bellingham, previously said the Intalco aluminum smelter will be built into one of only two green smelters in the nation, which will reduce the plant's carbon emissions by more than 65%, equivalent to around 750,000 cubic tons of emissions a year.
